MEDICINE MATTERS

What Happens If I Miss a Dose?

Missing a dose happens to almost everyone at some point. What you should do depends on the medication and how close it is to your next scheduled dose.

For many medications, the general advice is to take the missed dose when you remember. However, if it is almost time for your next dose, you may be told to skip the missed dose and return to your regular schedule.

You should not double up on medication unless your doctor or pharmacist specifically tells you to. Taking extra medication can increase the risk of side effects, low blood pressure, low blood sugar, bleeding, drowsiness, or other problems depending on the drug.

Some medications require special instructions if missed. This includes blood thinners, seizure medications, diabetes medications, birth control, antibiotics, and medications taken weekly instead of daily.

If you are unsure what to do, call your pharmacy. Pharmacists answer missed-dose questions often and can give guidance based on your exact medication.

To prevent missed doses, consider using a pill organizer, phone alarm, medication app, or automatic refill program.

Bottom line: Missed-dose instructions depend on the medication. Do not automatically double your dose. Ask your pharmacist for medication-specific advice.
